August Member Spotlight: Strong at 89: The Remarkable Nancy Morrison.

At Elevate, strength isn’t defined by age. It’s built through consistency, resilience and the determination to keep moving forward. Few people embody that more powerfully than longtime Elevate client Nancy Morrison.

Nancy has been training at Elevate for more than 10 years—and at 89 years young, she is still showing up and putting in the work.

Her life story is every bit as inspiring as her commitment in the gym. After contracting polio as a child, Nancy went on to build a groundbreaking legal career, serving nine years on the British Columbia Provincial Criminal Court (one of the few women at that time!) and another 15 years as a justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Her career unfolded during a time when women faced significant barriers in the legal profession. Yet Nancy didn’t simply find her place within that system—she became an advocate for social justice, equality and meaningful law reform.

Nancy captured many of those experiences in her memoir, Benched: Passion for Law Reform. The book looks back on her 50-year legal career and the enormous social changes she witnessed and helped advance along the way.

Her story extends well beyond the courtroom.

For 24 years, Nancy shared her life with actor and television personality Bruno Gerussi, best known for playing Nick Adonidas on the iconic Canadian television series The Beachcombers. Following Bruno’s death, Nancy wrote Bruno: Love in the Kitchen, a cookbook and loving tribute that celebrated his passion for cooking, food and bringing people together.

Lawyer. Judge. Author. Advocate. Partner. Polio survivor. And now, at 89, a wonderful example of what lifelong strength can look like.

Nancy’s continued commitment to training is a reminder that fitness isn’t only about lifting heavier or moving faster. It’s about preserving independence, confidence and the ability to continue enjoying life. The work we put in today helps us keep doing the things that matter tomorrow.

Nancy had worked with a personal trainer prior to coming to Elevate, and so was no stranger to fitness when she walked through our doors. But she has stayed because she likes the relaxed and inclusive vibe of the gym, and how approachable Chris and Wes are, while being able to accommodate her mobility limitations. It also helps that she brings her famous banana chocolate muffins (from her cookbook!) as a gift after every workout. After more than a decade at Elevate, Nancy continues to inspire our trainers and fellow clients simply by showing up, staying engaged and proving that strength truly has no age limit.

Nancy, we’re proud to have you as part of the Elevate community—and we look forward to many more workouts together.
